Zafranal copper mine project
Report summary
Zafranal is an open pit copper-gold mine project located at an elevation of 1400-2900masl and 166km (90 km straight line) northwest of Arequipa in southern Peru. Proposed operations comprise of truck and shovel open pit mining to feed a conventional sulphide flotation concentrator of 65-70kt/d capacity (capacity is variable due to hardness of the ore). The life stripping ratio (after pre-stripping) was estimated at 1.14. Total pre-production capital has been estimated at US$1.263 billion (2019$). This includes the mining cost for pre-stripping. Zafranal submitted the EIA to Senace (the environmental authority) the last week of December 2021. After this, the plan was to make a public audience in about two months. They expect approval of this EIA in about 7-9 months or by the end of 2022.
