Exploration in the Widyan - North Arabian Gulf Basin has provided several super-giant oil discoveries, trapped in compression related structures associated with the convergence of the Arabian and Iranian plates. Despite the huge hydrocarbon potential of the region, exploration and production has been limited by a series of above-ground issues including the July 1958 revolution; nationalisation of Iraq's industry in 1975; UN sanctions from 1990 to 2003 in response to the first Gulf War; and more recently, anti-government protests in 2019, which has resulted in political gridlock.
