Upstream licensing round quarterly: 2021 offers glimmers of a recovery
Report summary
This Licensing Round report covers Q4 2020, a review of the full year and January 2021. In Q4 2020, a handful of rounds closed and minimal rounds launched. The quarter cemented the muted trends observed all year: governments delayed rounds and moved online; some tried to support with incentives and flexibility, but few companies prioritised acreage loading. Frontier areas were out of favour while established basins with infrastructure had more chance of attracting attention. 2021 started out with a more upbeat number of awards, a trend governments hope will continue as they are keen to resume and promote the delayed rounds from last year.
