Midstream deep dive: Bakken long-haul crude transport – history repeating?
Report summary
The Bakken region, remote from major midcontinent or Gulf Coast demand centers, is beholden to long haul pipelines providing efficient market access and underpinning local production economics. As Bakken production recovers from the 2014 – 2016 downswing and hits all-time production highs, the aforementioned will prove to be an obstacle to regional producers as they ramp production. Egress issues could derail operators’ plans, potentially creating wide differentials to WTI, as production growth runs the risk of outpacing capacity beginning in 2023 – 2024.
