The Green New Deal non-binding resolution was introduced in the US House of Representatives on February 7. Specifics remain unclear on several fronts, but it would require the US power sector to replace all fossil fuel generation, and perhaps even all nuclear generation, by as soon as 2030. In this Insight, Wood Mackenzie takes 2018 hourly demand and generation data from US power grid operators (where available) and extrapolates what would be required to meet 2018 demand with only renewable energy and energy storage. We examine different mixes of wind and solar to see if there is a combination that can best satisfy the needs of the power system over the course of a year. In this "first look", we ignore the challenges of transmission grid expansion. We also explore how nuclear power reduces renewable energy curtailment and storage requirements.
