On 2 June, Mexico’s citizens will go to the polls to choose their next president and over 20,000 government officials. Presidential frontrunners Claudia Sheinbaum and Xóchitl Gálvez both support the energy transition, but with differing strategies. Sheinbaum, representing the incumbent party, Morena, will continue her predecessor’s state-centred approach, prioritising the state-owned enterprise Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) over private participation in the power market. Gálvez, leading the opposition coalition, plans to reinstate the 2013 Energy Reform policy, reviving long-term power auctions and increasing private sector involvement in the power market.
