Dnieper-Donets basin shale gas unconventional concept play
Report summary
The Dnieper-Donets basin in eastern Ukraine is a major gas-producing region that is yet-to-be explored with modern exploration and drilling technology. The basin holds substantial conventional potential and also unconventional gas potential. Exploration and production are dominated by state-owned Naftogaz. Only a small number of IOCs have positions in Ukraine with all focusing on conventional targets. In 2012, Chevron and Shell entered Ukraine in the search for unconventionals. However, continued fiscal changes and political instability ultimately led to both majors withdrawing from by 2015. The move was a blow to the future of Ukraine's unconventionals.
