The offshore Absheron gas-condensate field was discovered in 2011 by a Total-led consortium. Absheron is located in water depths of more than 470 metres, about 35 kilometres east of the giant Shah Deniz field. Despite limited appraisal and complex geology, the discovery was declared commercial in 2012.In late 2016, progress was made towards field development.
