On 20th June 2024, The Carlyle Group, a private equity firm, has agreed to buy Energean’s assets in Egypt, Italy and Croatia for up to US$945 million, of which US$820 is firm. Carlyle will establish a standalone E&P company focussed on the Mediterranean, headed by ex-BP CEO Tony Hayward. Energean will refocus on its core assets in Israel and future growth in Morocco and set up a new subsidiary to centralise its Carbon Capture and Storage projects. Completion is expected by the end of 2024, subject to customary regulatory and antitrust approvals.
