The legacy Central Asia-Centre (CAC) gas pipeline network was built in the 1960-80s to transport Central Asian gas to Russia for internal use and onward export to Europe.Two strings of the pipeline were reversed in 2023 – operating north-south – to enable the first-ever exports of Russian gas to Uzbekistan.Gazprom's gas purchases from Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are significantly below historical peaks.
