The Christina Lake project is located in the Athabasca region of Alberta, 120 kilometres to the south of Fort McMurray. Christina Lake's bitumen is recovered in-situ, using Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) technology. Christina Lake received regulatory approval in 2000 and a pilot phase began steam injection in May 2002. First production followed in the last quarter of 2002.
