The Coniston and Novara heavy oil fields are located in the Exmouth sub-basin, within the Carnarvon Basin, offshore Western Australia. Novara was discovered by Esso Australia in 1982, and Coniston in 2000 by BHP Billiton. The fields lie seven kilometres north of the Van Gogh field and 15 kilometres north-northwest of the Ravensworth field. Coniston is located in production licences WA-35-L and WA-55-L. Novara lies wholly in production licence WA-35-L.
