In early 2023, Colombia introduced a forward-looking National Development Plan to transform its energy landscape. The plan focuses on five key actions, including shifting away from coal and oil dependence while using their revenue to fund the transition. Currently, Colombia relies on hydroelectric power, while its exports are dominated by emission-intensive resources. Colombia has substantial untapped potential for renewable energy due to abundant solar and wind resources and attractive tax incentives. However, obstacles like institutional complexities and social conflicts hinder renewable energy projects. Despite recent changes like halting new exploration contracts and increased taxes, the oil and gas sector still plays a crucial role in the Colombian economy.
