The GPC fields consist of up to 20 oil and gas fields located in the Gulf of Suez and the Western Desert. The General Petroleum Corporation (GPC) operates the fields on behalf of EGPC.The first field, Hurghada, was discovered as early as 1915. Subsequent discoveries were not made until the 1930s when the Ras Gharib heavy oil field was discovered. Other key fields include Bakr, discovered in 1958, and Al Hamd, discovered in 2004.
