Governments rely on their national champions for energy, tax revenues, jobs and diplomacy. But the economic reality of a US$30/bbl oil price is very different to that of US$40/bbl, and corporate plans have changed as a result. The Asian NOCs are under more pressure than ever to balance their state obligations with commercial priorities. We consider the outlook for PetroChina, Sinopec, CNOOC Ltd, PETRONAS and PTTEP.
