Nepal lies in the collision zone between the Indian sub-continent and the Tibetan plateau of the Eurasian continent. The collision zone stretches from Pakistan in the northwest to Burma in the southeast and is flanked to the west and east by lateral transform margins. From north to south, Nepal is broadly divided by four main thrust faults into five major structural zones: Tethys Himalaya, High Himalaya, Lesser Himalaya, Siwalik and Terai.
