Rumaila has been the backbone of Iraq's production for over six decades. Located in the province of Basra, production peaked at 1.7 million b/d in the late-1970s. However, a lack of investment caused production to decline to 1 million b/d by 2009. BP and CNPC were awarded a Technical Services Contract (TSC) to redevelop the field in 2009. The aim of the contract is to increase production to 2.1 million b/d by 2019.
