The entire West Qurna/Rumaila structure is one of the largest oil fields in the world, second only to Saudi Arabia's Ghawar field. West Qurna is the northward continuation of the Rumaila field, which extends in a north/south direction for more than 100 kilometres from the Kuwaiti border.
