The Santa Barbara field, discovered in 1941 by Consolidated Petroleum, lies within the North Monagas area of the Maturín sub-Basin and covers an area of 230 square kilometres. The deeper reservoir of the Santa Barbara field was discovered in 1988, following the neighbouring El Furrial and Carito Central discoveries.Intensive field development resulted in a peak liquids production of 223,000 b/d in 1998.
