Report summary
The key Malampaya gas field fuels around 20% of Luzon's power generation. Malampaya's importance as an energy source is further heightened by it being the only onstream gas field in the Philippines. The area covered by Service Contract 38 (SC38) contains the gas, condensate, and oil discoveries of Malampaya, Camago, and San Martin. In 1997 and 1998, gas sales and purchase agreements (GSPAs) with National Power Corporation (NPC) and First Gen enabled the development of the country's first, and so far the only major gas project. Under Shell's operatorship, the deep water Malampaya field was developed via subsea completions tied back to a processing platform in shallow water. Gas is exported via a 504 km subsea pipeline to a gas processing plant at Tabangao, Batangas in South Luzon. An onshore gas transmission system routes the gas from Tabangao to multiple gas-fired power plants.
