This annual review looks back to the key 2023 events, trends and statistics in exploration, production, investment, M&A, licensing and geopolitics across Sub-Saharan Africa. Maintaining and boosting production was a highlight. The region’s oil and gas output posted a strong 5% increase, contributed mainly by Nigeria with a 10% year-on-year growth. Capex increased for the third year in a row. Spend on development drilling doubled that of 2021, underpinned by deepwater developments in West Africa and onshore drilling in Uganda.
