Touring natural gas resources in Latin America
Report summary
Latin America has a significant amount of undeveloped gas resources that were not prioritized for development, and instead oil projects were generally favored. Gas demand in the region will continue to grow driven by coal replacement in power generation and industrial processes. To meet this demand the region will need to increase its natural gas supply to counter production decline. Also, for some companies, gas is being considered a key component in their energy transition strategy. This insight analyses the main issues challenging development of gas projects in countries with existing discovered resources. It assesses how Mexico is increasingly integrated with the US natural gas markets, how the countries in the mid-continent such as Colombia, Venezuela and Peru are the most challenged in their regional gas integration, and how the southern cone countries can further increase the integration of their natural gas markets, with Argentina potentially becoming a regional exporter.
