Mexico will hold a general election on 2 June 2024. The energy sector in Mexico faces major challenges linked to the growth of demand in all sub-segments. There is limited investment to increase domestic primary energy supply, major structural issues exist involving the role of key state-owned energy companies, and dependency of gasoline and natural gas imports are a medium-term concern. Regardless of the presidential election outcome, there is a need for the new government to re-assess not only the role but also the terms for increasing private investment in the energy sector.
