Did you know?

Coronavirus has shifted demand

Flexible packaging demand has shifted dramatically in response to lockdowns put in place to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Demand for medical supplies has grown in the double digits. This growth is set to persist into 2021 as demand for personal protective equipment (PPE) remains strong. Demand for ‘comfort foods’ such as confectionary and snacks, alcohol and tobacco has also increased.

Impact of healthy eating

In the UK, snack food, confectionary, baked goods and dried foods, account for more than 45% of flexible packaging usage – all areas under threat from healthy eating trends. However, these categories continue to grow as companies fight back by introducing healthier products.

East is outstripping West

Eastern Europe contains some of the fastest growing markets, notably Russia. Demand is forecast to grow at a faster rate than Western Europe by 2024.

On the production side, there is likely to be additional investment in new capacity in Eastern Europe, with much of it used to further boost exports and meet growing domestic demand. West European producers, especially in Germany, face the prospect of increasing out-of-region competition and share erosion.
