ArcelorMittal Europe hits the brakes with raw material force majeure notice
Report summary
On 19 March, ArcelorMittal Europe issued force majeure notices to its raw material suppliers, including US and Australian metallurgical coal suppliers. As the coronavirus spreads across Europe, declines in steel demand, including over 80% of automobile factories temporally shutting down, continue to pressure steel companies. Numerous production reductions and blast furnace idlings were recently announced. ArcelorMittal's coke ovens may be spared production declines, but extended coal supply disruptions will force operators to consider their options soon.
