Mangoola is a large surface mine located in the upper Hunter Valley, approximately 20 kilometres west of Muswellbrook. The mine produces thermal coal for export and domestic markets. The Mangoola mine is contained within mining lease ML 1626. Glencore (then Xstrata) acquired the greenfield project (then called Anvil Hill) from Centennial in 2007 for A$425 million, and developed the mine at a total cost of A$1 billion.
