Commodity Market Report
North America coal short-term outlook November 2019: Will winter weather wane?
Report summary
Will full-year coal-fired generation end below 1,000 TWh in 2019? We are presently forecasting 995 TWh of generation for this year. The early November runup in natural gas prices would normally result in additional coal generation; however, utilities pre-purchasing gas volumes could limit any switching. Henry Hub natural gas prices this winter are expected to be US$1.0/mmbtu less than last year. With demand faltering, mine capacity shut-ins are continuing.
