Commodity Market Report
North America coal short-term outlook September 2020: recovery in the shoulder season
Report summary
Stockpile levels are currently at 138 Mst or 83 days of average burn, with several coal-fired EGUs reporting that their stockpiles are below 30 days of burn. August export volumes from Hampton Roads were at its 4th lowest volume since 2014. The disposition of coal-fired EGUs and coal mines continues to unfold as market participants grapple with the oncoming energy transition. The western resources joint venture between Arch Resources and Peabody Energy was terminated following an adverse ruling in US district court. AEP and Vistra Energy made announcements that concern 10 GW of coal-fired EGUs. Coal generation will increase by 24% in 2021. However, spot prices will be influenced mainly by the limited growth in US thermal exports.
