Werris Creek in a tuck and shovel surface coal mine that commenced production in 2006. It is located in the Werrie Basin near Gunnedah in New South Wales. The mine is wholly owned and operated by Whitehaven, and produces predominantly thermal coal for the export market, as well as a smaller fraction of PCI. Werris Creek operates within mining leases ML1563, ML1671 and ML1672. Werris Creek has a competitive cash cost, which benefits from low processing costs as the raw coal mined does not require washing.
