Germany is one of the largest energy consumers in Europe, reflecting the size of its economy and the large contribution of the manufacturing sector to GDP. Over the last decade, the relationship between GDP growth and total energy demand weakened as energy efficiency improvements intensified and as Germany lost competitiveness in its heavy manufacturing industries.
