Can Japan turn around its struggling nuclear industry? - Highlights
Report summary
In October 2021, Japan announced the 6th Strategic Energy Plan, targeting a 20-22% nuclear share in the power generation mix by 2030. The target supports the country’s existing 2050 carbon neutral goal, as well as a 2030 goal of reducing carbon emissions by 46% from 2013 levels. However, nuclear in Japan accounted for only 4% of its power generation mix in 2020, compared to 25% share in 2010 before the Fukushima accident. This report provides our latest analysis and outlook of Japan’s nuclear fleet to 2030 and beyond.
