The Andrade mine is located in the northeast corner of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero (QF) region in Minas Gerais state, near the town of Joao Monlevade. The mine is owned and operated by ArcelorMittal through its subsidiary ArcelorMittal Brazil. Andrade supplies sinter feed to ArcelorMittal's João Monlevade integrated steel plant and is linked to the plant by an 11-kilometre dedicated railway. The mine has one of the highest strip ratios among the ones operating in the QF which negatively impacts its mining costs. However, this is balanced out by the high grade nature of its hematitic ore.
