Los Frailes mine in Aznalcóllar, located 36km north-west of Seville, is expected to resume operations by around 2020. In 1998 there was a serious failure of the tailings dam, this coupled with low prevailing zinc prices and Boliden's unwillingness to invest in the pushback for the Pit 3 shell, led to the mine's closure in 2001. On 20 February, 2015 the operational rights were awarded to a consortium of Grupo Mexico and Minorbis. They are planning on operating an underground mine, with a maximum mill capacity of approximately 2.7Mt/a.
