Asset Report
Granite City steel plant
Report summary
US Steel's Granite City steel plant produces hot rolled coil, cold rolled coil and coated sheet products. Most of the steel produced is sold to the construction, automotive, container and tube/pipe sectors. The plant has two blast furnaces (BFs), "A" and "B", which together hold a hot metal output rate of 2.4 Mtpa. In March 2020, US Steel announced it would temporarily idle its smallest 1-Mtpa BF "A" at Granite City due to weak market conditions following the coronavirus crisis. In June 2022, company leaders announced plans to sell the two BFs to SunCoke, which wants to transition the Granite City mill to start producing its own pig iron as early as 2024 to sell to U.S. Steel’s factories in other states. At the time of writing, US has not yet provided any timeframe on the BF's restart nor was any selling agreement reached.
