Hamersley - Channar iron ore mine
Report summary
Channar, part of Rio Tinto's Hamersley group of operations, is located approximately 20 kilometres east of Paraburdoo, and forms a part of Rio Tinto's Greater Paraburdoo Operations. It is a medium sized mine producing up to 11Mtpa. The mine was a 60:40 joint venture between Rio Tinto and China's Sinosteel that was established into in 1987. The agreed 290Mt production was achieved on 22 October 2020, marking the end of the joint venture and all production will now be reported as Hamersley Mines (excluding HIY). Channar is expected to close in 2022.
