In the 1780s, Parys Mountain was the largest copper mine in the world and the area has been exploited to some degree since Roman times, with mining ceasing in the early 20th century. While several proposals to exploit a number of small polymetallic orebodies have been made since the 1980s, none have come to fruition. A revised mine development plan was published in 2007, with three phases of mining.
