South Deeps is the 7th deepest gold mine in the world. When Goldfields acquired the mine the plan was to produce up to 1.2Moz/a of gold. In 2009 a feasibility study based on annual gold production of 700koz was approved. However, production ramp up has been severely affected by a variety of issues, chiefly lack of skilled mechanised mining people. In 2015, production hit an all time low of 198koz. A new re-based mine plan released in February 2017 has estimated a maximum steady state production of 500koz/a.
