Kurdish Independence movement: what’s at risk?
Report summary
On 25 September 2017, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) held an independence referendum which won 93% majority support. The referendum was held despite objections from the federal Iraq government and neighbouring nations Turkey and Iran. The US also opposed the holding of a referendum. After the vote, Iraq blocked international flights from Kurdistan's starting 29 September 2017. Turkey also said it might cut off oil exports from northern Iraq – which go via its Ceyhan port. International flights continue to be halted, but Turkey has not cut off oil flows through the Iraq-Turkey pipeline.
