The Foster Creek project is located in the Athabasca region of Alberta, 190 kilometres to the south of Fort McMurray. Foster Creek’s bitumen is recovered in-situ, using Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) technology. Foster Creek became Canada's first large-scale commercial SAGD project when it was commissioned in 2001. The project has been developed in a series of stages.
