The Kitan oil field was discovered in 2008. It was located in the Timor-Leste/Australia Joint Petroleum Development Area (JPDA), around 150 kilometres from the Timor-Leste coast and 350 kilometres from the Australian coastline. This area is now within Timor-Leste's exclusive economic zone. The initial development comprised of three subsea wells on the Kitan field, tied back to the Glas Dowr leased floating production storage and offtake (FPSO) facility. Production ceased in 2015, decommissioning is still ongoing.
