South Ghawar unconventional gas

Report summary

Saudi Aramco is focussing its unconventional gas activity in three areas: Northwestern Saudi (near the Irqai and Jordanian borders), south of Ghawar and the Jafurah Basin (east of Ghawar). Although generically termed 'shale gas', the geological targets in each of these areas differ widely. Since 2012, Saudi Aramco has drilled many wells in the Rub al-Khali desert to investigate both the conventional and unconventional potential. However, the remoteness of that region means that unconventional gas development has not progressed as much as in the three other areas.
