Reverse gas flows from Europe have been complimented by Ukraine's own modest gas production to meet recovering domestic demand. Direct Russian gas imports to Ukraine stopped in 2015, but the country does remain an important transit country for Russian flows to Europe. While Russia intends to diversify away from a reliance on Ukraine transit, an extension agreement was reached at the end of 2019 that will maintain flows to the end of 2024. Ukraine's ambitions to lift its gas production from relatively large domestic resources have mostly failed.
