Report summary
Cominco Binani Zinc was founded in 1964 as a joint venture between the Binani family and Cominco of Canada. The initial capacity of the Binanipuram smelter was 14kt/a and the site in Kerala was chosen because of its access to port facilities and proximity to plentiful supplies of water and power. The capacity of Binanipuram in 2008 is estimated at 38kt/a-slab zinc. Lack of space to expand and the absence of indigenous raw materials has meant that further zinc ambitions have been focused...
