Commodity Market Report
Global rare earths short-term outlook June 2022
Report summary
After stabilizing in early June, lower purchasing activity in China has seen prices fall back for key rare earth oxides used in magnet applications, with the exception of gadolinium oxide. Prices for non-magnet-related rare earths also fell back in June, including lanthanum and cerium oxides, which remain at or close to cost of production. Demand growth from magnet applications continues to restructure the rare earths industry, with a growing focus on the production of Nd-Pr in the short-term outlook. Demand from automotive applications maintains strong growth despite weaker Chinese EV/HEV sales volumes in Q2 2022. Improving supply availability for heavy rare earth in the domestic Chinese market will see prices weaken further in the short term, before recovering as demand growth accelerates.
