Jamalco’s delayed restart to intensify Atlantic alumina deficit
Report summary
A major fire at Jamalco’s powerhouse on 22 August, extensively damaged that section of the plant. The powerhouse produces power, compressed air and steam for refining operations. Jamalco declared force majeure on alumina shipments after the incident. The global alumina market has been rocked by disruptions in the Atlantic market. The 1.2-Mtpa Gramercy refinery in the USA ceased operations in the wake of Hurricane Ida. The 3.8-Mtpa Alumar refinery is still operating at reduced capacity following structural damage of one bauxite unloader. Even though the Gramercy refinery has resumed operations, the Atlantic alumina market is still in a deficit. In this insight, we will assess the impact of the disruptions in the alumina market.
