Thalanga Restart copper mine
Report summary
The Thalanga mine is located approximately 200km from Townsville and 65km from Charters Towers, in Northern Queensland. It was a polymetallic deposit that restarted underground mining activities in April 2017 after being acquired by Red River Resources in 2014. The operation was producing separate copper, lead and zinc concentrates and had offtake agreements in place with Glencore and Trafigura. Steady state production was about 400kt/a. A series of setbacks in 2022 meant production never fully recovered and the mine was placed into care and maintenance in October.
