The Tsumeb copper smelter was commissioned in 1962 to treat concentrates from the Tsumeb and Kombat mines. A lead smelter, lead refinery, cadmium plant and arsenic plant are also on the same site. In March 1996 Goldfields Namibia announced that the Tsumeb mine would be closed late 1996/early 1997. Exploration activity was intensified in order to provide replacement ore resources and so maintain the operations at the copper smelter. However, on 22 August annual wage negotiations broke down...
