Commodity Market Report
Austria downstream oil long-term outlook
Report summary
A landlocked country in the Alpine region at the heart of Central Europe, Austria is one of the wealthiest countries in Europe in terms of GDP per capita. The country is a net importer of oil products, mostly sourced from neighbouring Germany. We expect a gradual decline in demand for road transport fuel over the longer term as the economy matures and vehicle engines become more fuel-efficient. OMV operates the country's only crude oil refinery, Schwechat, which sells around 70% of its output on the domestic market. In the retail fuel sector, market leader international companies have been rationalising their network, whereas rising independent players continue to growing their market share, leveraging the high-volume automated service station format.
