The Lower Saxony basin in northwest Germany is a key oil-producing region that is believed to hold unconventional gas potential in its shale horizons. The marine-based Posidonia shale is the most prospective horizon in the basin. It is also a proven source rock in the North Sea. BEB (ExxonMobil 50%, Shell 50%) and ExxonMobil control nearly all unconventional acreage and were the key forces behind initial exploration, but since 2011, activity has decreased and no new wells have been drilled.
