In 1982, Agip discovered the Mnazi Bay gas field in the onshore Rovuma Basin, southern Tanzania. Due to the lack of gas market in Tanzania, the field was not developed at the time. In 2004, Artumas (now Wentworth Resources) acquired the block and initiated the Mtwara Energy Project (MEP). Gas production began in 2006. Maurel & Prom operates the Mnazi Bay licence, after farming into the licence.
